Free SEO Tools to assist you in improving your website

Spoke with a customer this morning and it was during this conversation that the question was asked, what does SEO mean ? What is a backlink ? What is a Blog ? and what the hell is Twitter ?

It is so easy to believe that everybody knows and understands what seo is, or a backlink and not to mention Twitter and more importantly what it can do for you. But alas poor Yorick, that is not always the case and with that in mind, we now pressent a brief Glossary of SEO Common Words.

This Glossary is by no means complete and final and is given purely as a guide.

AdSense – is an effective way for publishers, regardless of size or experience, to display relevant Google Ads within their website’s content pages. The ads are related to your website content and as such, appeal to your website visitors. This helps in monetizing your website.

AdWords – Google’s advertising service for displaying Ads of your website as paid inclusion. More details can be found at http://adwords.google.com/

Algorithm – is an operational program rule that determines how a particular search engine, like Google, Yahoo and MSN, indexes content and then displays it accordingly.

Alt Tag - A tag that provides alternative text for visually impaired users. Search engines may pick this text instead of graphical images.Anchor text Anchor text is the visible text in a hyperlink. Search engines may pick this up for ranking, although this in itself is no guarantee of a higher search ranking.

Backlink – As the name suggests are inbound links from another web page, pointing to your website.

Blog - Blogs are also known as weblogs. An online Diary with the owner posting random comments, promoting products, services, or information. Posts are made on a regular basis and are increasing in value to both the users and the search engines.

Crawl – When a search engine visits your website and extracts your content for search results.

External links – A link that forwards to a website outside the home domain name (third party).

Flash Intro – An animated short introduction. The website sits behind the Flash Intro and visitors can skip them as a general rule.

Internal links – An Internal link is a link that points to another page within the same website or Domain. Interal Links can also be utilised for navigation purposes.

Javascript – A script language that can be embedded into the HTML of a webpage to add functionality.

Link Farm – A set of interlinked web pages or websites that have been built for the sole purpose of increasing the number of incoming links to a web site, thereby with the aim of increasing link popularity and search engine rankings. TO BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS.

Meta Tag - A special HTML tag that provides information about a Web page. Generally used for search engines to describe your website. Please read more about Meta Tags and their Hidden Advantage

PageRank (PR) – Google’s method to determine a webpage’s relevance, popularity and importance through the quality of sites linking to it.

Referring Page – A Website visitor clicks a link from another website and is directed to your website. The originating website is called the referring page.

SEO – An abbreviation for Search Engine Optimisation (Optimization). Involves strategies to optimize and promote your website in a proven technique, all with the aim of improving your search engines ranking.

Spam - Excessive manipulation to influence search engine rankings.  TO BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS.

The above is by no means complete and there are numerous good sources for more detailed explanations.

We trust you have found the above of some benefit.

Until Net Time …

Blogs are or should be considered a strategic business communication and marketing tool. Why do we believe that ? Good Question … Here is a brief list of why we believe that.

1. Blogs are becoming a standard for savvy Internet users. The number of users, feeds and blogs are growing everyday and businesses recognise the fact that they can engage their potential customers on a more personal level.

2. Keyword / keyword Phrases. This wold have to be the one single reason why they rank so high. You are talking about a particular product or service and with that comes relevant high quality keywords. Simple as that and yet we still have customers that can not understand, accept or acknowledge that concept. Read the rest of this entry »

The following Tips are just that, Tips or ideas. They are certainly not definitive, nor are they exhaustive, but purely given as a guide, nothing more, nothing less.

Please feel free to add to them as and when you see fit:

1. Create original relevant content.
2. Add fresh relevant content on a regular basis.
3. Create content where it’s principles remain valid, if possible, for years to come.
4. Write as if you are talking with friends or family, not the search engines.
5. One (1) Subject, One (1) Post. Keyword relevant rich content. Read the rest of this entry »

Website Traffic is the most essential thing for a website to become a successful internet based business. Aside from ensuring that you have great products and services to sell,  you do need traffic, quality traffic, to be successful.

If you already have a website and yet think that you’re not getting the traffic that you want to have or should have, then it’s maybe time to review, your current website.

You should always be on your guard and be ever mindful of your competitors websites and review how they are achieving their results. Is it becasue of traffic and if so, How, Where, Why, When.

Generating traffic or more quality traffic to your website, is not as difficult as you might imagine. However, what may be difficult for some webiste owners, is the fact that they may need to do it themselves or engage the services of a company to assist. It is no longer a case of I have built my website, where are my customers. Does not work that way and I seriously doubt it ever did.

Here are three ways to increase your traffic starting from yesterday.

1) Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is a cute little buzz word being thrown around at the moment, however, this cute little buzz word effectively allows you to spread the word about your company and product with minimal cost. This is a marketing method that can be used intelligently, whereby you can attach your company’s name, signature, product or link to any available media such as a You Tube, Twitter, Face Book, Linked In or Community Forum etc…. If used correctly, your website will generate additional traffic as your post, input, video or thread is passed from pillar to post.

2) Correct keywords or keyword phrases for your website

Search engines look for certain keywords that they then display in their results page. So it naturally follows that by having the right keyword and relevant keyword phrase is a high priority for ranking high within the search engines. Case in point: Client wants to be number 1 for the term “Real Estate” however, after much convincing the term “Port Stephens Real Estate” is used, as it is a much better selection ofa keyword, plus, it certainly is not as competitive. End result, the customer is satisifed with the results and they also get a better understanding of why and how relevant keywords work.

3) Write Articles that can lead traffic to your site

Consider submitting articles to websites that contain the similar subjects to yours. For example, you sell car parts, then write press releases and articles about cars and car parts. Include your website description and services at the end of the article. Please remember to include your link. There are a number of Article Submission places that encourage you to write and submit articles on your area of expertise. These articles are then used by other websites on the proviso that the article remains in tact, complete with your link.

End of the day, it comes down to the same rules, if you like and that is that you need to take full responsibility for your website and it’s results or lack of. Don’t have the expertise, that’s ok, contact a company that does, but either way, you still need to do something.

It is highly recommended to consider using your targeted keywords within the page title itself. The title tag is different from the Meta Tag, however it is worth considering it in relation to them. Whatever text you place within the Title Tag (ie: between the <title> and </title> portions) will appear in the title bar of the browser and this is what your website visitors and more importantly the Search Engines will see when they visit your web page.  Additionally, some browsers may append whatever you place in the Title Tag by adding their own name, as for example Microsoft’s Internet Explorer or OPERA.

The Search Engines may decide to rank your web page based purely on the actual text you use within the Title Tag.

If you have designed your website as a series of websites or linked pages and not just a single Home Page, you must bear in mind that each page of your website must be optimised accordingly. The Title Tag of each page i.e. the keywords you use on that page and the keyword phrases that you use in the content will draw traffic to your site.  Although the Title Tag on each page must reflect the actual content of that page, it is to be used in conjunction with the Meta Tags, Description and keywords, if it is to be ranked highly for your preferred keywords.

The unique combination of these words and phrases and content will draw customers using different search engine terms and techniques, so ensure that you capture all the keywords and phrases you need for each product, service or information page.

One of the most common mistakes made by small business owners when they first design their website is to place their business name in every title of every page.  Identify what your product or service is and use that title within the Title Tag.

One last thing to consider when writing your Title Tag is to avoid using words like “and”, “at” and “the” as they will have no direct impact on your keyword preference. Everything you do on your webpage should be directed to improving your search engine position.

All websites needs visitors. Gee, what a profound statement, no I can not take credit for that.  How original, all websites needs visitors. Sounds simple doesn’t it, yet we, Hosting Impact, receive phone calls and or emails daily from website owners that had their websites designed by other companies and want us to provide them with a FREE SEO Report. We gladly do this report as it identifies key SEO factors that, if addressed, will improve how the search engines currently look at them.

The conversation with the customer normally goes like this:

Hosting: Good Morning, Hosting Impact, How may we help you ?
Customer: I have a website and want you to do your FREE SEO Report.
Hosting: OK, How long have you had the website for ?
Customer: about 4 years and we are not being found in the search engines ?

It is at this point, judging from the tone of the customer, that we can also summise that they have not changed, altered and or added information, relevant information to it. The conversation normally ends with the customer saying, “The web design company isn’t as good as we thought they were and we have been ripped off. Our response, In some cases, yes that may very well be true, however, in a lot of cases, web designers are not by nature, SEO Specialists or even SEO aware. Nor should they be, it is a different ballgame all together. Additionally, you had this designed 4 years ago. 4 years is a long time in the internet and a lot of things have changed, have you changed your website at all in 4 years ?

Hello…..Hello…Are you there ?

There are certain design principles that have evolved that will certainly assist in search engine optimisation, but overall, web design is not to be confused with true SEO. That is like going to a dentist and asking, while your there, can you check my blood pressure and give me a clean bill of health. It aint going to happen.

A major source of traffic for most sites on the Internet is search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN, etc. Hence, by designing a search engine friendly site, you will be able to rank easily in search engines and obtain more visitors.

Major search engines use crawlers or robots to index websites to list on their search result pages. Once they have it indexed, they read the content of the page, record it in their own database and then display it as people search for it. Simplistically speaking.

If you want to make your site indexed easily, you should avoid using frames on your website. Frames are so yesterday. That is all we really need to say about that.

Refrain from presenting important information in Flash movies or within images. Search engine robots can only read text on your source code so if you present important words in Flash movies and images rather than textual form, your search engine ranking may be affected dramatically.

Use meta tags accordingly on each and every page of your site so that search engine robots know exactly what that particular page is about and whether or not to index it. By using meta tags, you are making the search engine robot’s job easier so they will crawl and index your site more frequently.

Stop using wrong HTML tags like <font> to style your page. Use CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) instead because they are more effective and efficient. By using CSS, you can eliminate redundant HTML tags and make your pages much lighter and faster to load.

Use Correct Title Tags when addressing your website.
Use Precise Meta Tags
Use Exact Description
Use Good Content
Use Correct Keywords
Use Alt Tags
Update With Fresh Content On A Regular Basis

Do Not Spam the Search Engines
Do Not Keyword Stuff Your Web Page – Do so at your own peril- You Have Been Warned

By adopting the above Do’s and Dont’s, you will be better received within the search engines.

Depending on the amount of feedback we receive, we will design a website live, brand new and show everybody the entire process, from start to finish. How to do it correctly. You can sit in and watch the entire process. There will be no charge, it will be completely free, we will not hide any aspect of it. At the end of it, you will be able to use the exact same principles on your own website. If this is of interest, please contact Hosting Impact accordingly.

We trust you have found this post of benefit.

Search Engine Optimization is a process of choosing the most appropriate targeted keyword phrases related to your website and business, ensuring that this ranks your site highly in search engines so that when someone searches for specific phrases it returns your website at least within the first 3 pages and ideally on the first page. Research has shown that website visitors generally do not go past the first three pages of search results and of course being on the first page is a preference.  It basically involves a process of incorporating fine tuning the content of your website along with HTML and Meta tag aspects and also appropriate link building systems.

The most popular search engines are Google, Yahoo, MSN and when you think about it they have only been around for about 10 years, give or take. Search engines keep their methods and ranking algorithms secret and change them accordingly. This in itself is not a bad thing as it helps to deter spam pages from clogging those results.  Another good thing from this change is the fact that web designers and SEO Specialists are encouraged to engage in sound seo practices. Of course, there are always those cowboys and self righteous ego manics that believe they can bend the rules to suit themselves, but they will be caught and their websites will be banned, it is just a matter of time. A search engine may use hundreds of factors while ranking the listings where the factors themselves and the weight each carries may change continually. Algorithms can differ so widely that a webpage that ranks #1 in a particular search engine could rank #200 in another search engine. New sites need not be “submitted” to search engines to be listed. A simple link from a well established site will get the search engines to visit the new site and begin to spider its contents. It can take a few days to even weeks from the referring of a link from such an established site for all the main search engine spiders to commence visiting and indexing the new site.

If you are unable to research and choose keywords and work on your own search engine ranking, you may want to hire someone to work with you on these issues. For additional infromation or assistance please contact Hosting Impact.

Search engine marketing and promotion companies, will look at the plan for your site and make recommendations to increase your search engine ranking and website traffic. They will also provide ongoing consultation and reporting to monitor your website and make recommendations for editing and improvements to keep your site traffic flow and your search engine ranking high. Normally search engine optimization experts work with your web designer to develop an integrated plan from the commencement of your website.
